Presentation
Challenges of Automation under Brownfield Conditions

200 mm fabs remain the backbone of so-called “lagging nodes,” which are essential for a wide range of applications in the automotive, industrial, and medical sectors. In times of labor shortages and rising operational costs, automation is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. At X-FAB Dresden, we have been pursuing a structured automation program for several years, aimed at increasing efficiency and resilience.

Our journey began with the implementation of foundational technologies: RFID-based material tracking, automated lot storage systems, and conveyor-based material transport. Each of these components brought its own set of challenges, requiring tailored solutions and close collaboration across teams.

In this presentation, we will share the current status of our automation efforts, reflect on the path that brought us here, and highlight key lessons learned during planning and implementation.
