Unlocking Potential: The Strategic Role of Automation in Europe's Largest Foundry

Automation has emerged as a critical enabler for operational excellence and competitiveness in large-scale manufacturing environments. The strategic implementation of new automation aspects within Europe’s largest foundry, highlighting its transformative impact on productivity, quality, and workforce dynamics. By integrating AI-driven process control, and predictive maintenance systems, Globalfoundries Dresden has achieved significant improvements in throughput, efficiency, and defect reduction.

Beyond operational gains, automation plays a pivotal role in addressing labor efficiencies and enhancing workplace safety, while fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. This underscores how automation is not merely a technological upgrade but a strategic lever for sustainable growth, resilience, and leadership in a demanding high-tech industry landscape. 

 

About Matthias Bonkaß

Matthias started his career back in 1997 with long term assignments in AMD Sunnyvale/California/US. He was a member of the Dresden startup teams for AMD Fab30 (200mm) in 1997 and AMD Fab36 (300mm) in 2004. After holding several management positions in the 200mm and 300mm lines he became a Module Manager in CMP/Plating in Fab1 in 2007 and later for GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab1 Thin Films.

2013 – 2020 he served as the Director of the Bump Test Facility (BTF) Dresden and during 2019/2020 also Bump Facility in EFK New York State. During this time the Backend was developed into a global service center serving beside Fab1 also for Fab7, Fab8, Fab10 within GF. The introduction of several cost-effective automation, quality and lean methods in the BTF was part of this journey besides the active engagement with the customers in identifying options of new engagements with new BTF technologies.

Since the end of 2020 is Matthias the Head and VP Manufacturing Engineering in Dresden Fab1 with full focus on the Fab1 quality, ramp challenge and cost efficiency in collaboration with all organizations in Dresden and worldwide.
